Abstract

The article examines rivalry as a complex socio-psychological phenomenon that manifests itself in various spheres of interpersonal and social interaction. The main theoretical approaches to the study of competition are analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the dual nature of rivalry, which, on the one hand, can perform an adaptive function by promoting self-development, increasing performance, and fostering healthy social ambitions, while on the other hand, it may lead to destructive consequences such as conflicts, emotional exhaustion, and social isolation. Particular attention is given to the mechanisms of rivalry formation at different stages of socialization, as well as its impact on the development of personal identity, the emotional sphere, and the behavioral strategies of the individual. Research aim. To identify the psychological features of rivalry as a socio-psychological phenomenon and to determine its significance for personality development and the functioning of social communities. Scientific novelty. The study systematizes and generalizes modern approaches to the analysis of rivalry from a psychological perspective. A comprehensive view of this phenomenon is proposed, considering it as a multidimensional construct encompassing cognitive, emotional, and behavioral levels. Its adaptive and destructive functions in social interactions are also outlined. Conclusions. Rivalry is an integral element of interpersonal and group dynamics. It can play a stimulating role by fostering motivation, increasing productivity, and promoting self-realization. At the same time, excessive or destructive competition may lead to conflicts, reduced self-esteem, and deterioration in the quality of social relations. Further research should focus on mechanisms of rivalry regulation and on identifying effective strategies for its constructive use.
